WIP Orchid painting completed

Okay, here it is. It sure looks alot different now. I used a background that I have never used before. I was told a long time ago to take chances with new colors and let myself go. Here is the result. The kaleidoscope background has many transparent layers in it. The first layers were burnt umber in some squares and raw sienna in the others. I put layers of Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna and Opera Rose over the top letting each layer dry completely. I like texture so I wanted the brushstrokes to show. I learned how to do this by hit and miss, the way that I do most of my work. The added colors tie the background and the foreground together. I added color pencil in some of the areas to pop the color. Mollie, the secret glaze is the Impellist flourescent orange. I just ordered more and the only place that I could find it was in Australia. I had to take this picture inside at a north window because it is raining today. The size of the painting is 15x21.

  2. Very lovely, Ellie. I'm glad I went to my home page so I could see it. Nice, interesting colors. Since I don't do WC any more, I'm not up on the latest colors--Impellist fluorescent orange sounds like fun--but only in Australia? Wow! That's going the distance! Anyway, some lucky customer will love it.

  3. Thanks to both of you. Lori, you don't do watercolors at all anymore? Wow, you always did the best florals, especially Iris's. I hope that you will do them now and then.

  4. Hi Ellie, I mostly forgot to say how wonderful your orchid painting is. The flowers are so full with colour and the composition is great, too. Very beautiful!!! What will be the next painting?

  5. Hi Doris. I didn't see you here. Thank you. That is quite a compliment coming from such an accomplished rose painter. I plan to do two kaleidoscope paintings with a rooster that one of my friends gave me (a porclean rooster...not a real one). I also plan on doing some kaleidoscope paintings of Greece. One of my fellow artists at the AAF gave me some pictures and he gave me permission to use them. Thanks Todd! They will be standard sized paintings. I am painting for my 2012 AAF show. I am taking a leave of absence from the 2011 show. I will surely miss being there.
